Miriam Scarborough and Mississippi's Project      

Miriam Scarborough, Chapter E, was the 4th P.E.O. state president serving from 1970 -1971.  She has attended almost every convention of Mississippi State Chapter since its organization, as well as having attended many conventions of International Chapter 

P.E.O. Chapter E, Biloxi, Mississippi, officially organized on Thursday, April 8, 1948 with Miriam Scarborough being both one of the charter members and the chapter recording secretary.  The Miriam Scarborough Scholarship was established by Chapter E in honor of Miriam Scarborough’s term as P.E.O. State President from 1970 to 1971. 


Miriam was born in Biloxi, MS, on December 9, 1916, and has been a life-long resident of Biloxi. She graduated from Biloxi High in 1934 and received her B.A. as well as a two-year medical certificate from the University of Mississippi. 

She was a bacteriologist at the Veteran’s Administration and received several outstanding achievement awards prior to her retirement. 

Miriam's interests include gardening, hand work, crafts, and reading.  She has been very active in all areas of the First United Methodist Church including:  President, VP, Secretary of UMW; Sunday School Teacher; Director of Vacation Bible School; and Methodist Women's Circle.

She also belongs to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Order of Eastern Star.
