P.E.O. Sisterhood



MIRIAM SCARBOROUGH SCHOLARSHIP
 
The Mississippi chapters of the P.E.O. Sisterhood sponsor the Miriam Scarborough Scholarship (MSS) established in 1973. It honors Miriam Scarborough who served as state president 1970-1971.

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a female MS high school graduate to attend Cottey College* or a college or university in the state of Mississippi.  The number of awards given depends on the available funds that are preserved in the P.E.O. Foundation. Each award granted is for one scholarship for one year and may be paid to the recipient or to her account at the school in which she is enrolled. Scholarships for $2,500 or less are paid in a single payment. Payments are mailed after July 1 when all requirements are complete.

The graded criteria used for awarding MSS uses a 100 (maximum) point system divided as shown:  
           
25% ACT (super score) or SAT combined score      25% Leadership

25% Grade Point Average                                     25% Need

REQUIREMENTS FOR MSS APPLICANTS
  • Mississippi resident and MS high school graduate
  • Accepted by Cottey College* or a college or university in Mississippi as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.
  • ACT score of 24 or higher (super score) or SAT combined score of 1100.
  • High school transcript should have a GPA of 2.5 (or higher) for 6 semesters on a 4 point grading system.
  • Leadership resume for grades 10-12 (include school, community and church activities).
  • A statement of financial need completed by parents.
  • An itemized cost figure for the school year.
  • The school counselor will provide the local P.E.O. MSS committee with the applicants information.
  • Qualified applicants may be asked to attend an interview with the local P.E.O. MSS Committee.
  • The number of awards given depends on the availability of funds. Each award granted is for one scholarship for one year and will be paid directly to the school.
 
Scholarships will be announced in March/April.
